Trump's New Motto Isn't New [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-24 In Phoenix, AZ, Dec.22nd, Trump said at a rally, and on Truth Social, "My administration will live by the motto, 'Promises Made, Promises KEPT.'" It didn't happen in his first administration and it's not going to happen in this one. As Lindsey Graham would say, we've seen this movie before. It's right there on trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov. Didn't even know the site existed. Disclaimer says the page is "frozen in time" and things might not work. What it should say is Trump never worked. He's been using the slogan/motto the whole time along with MAGA, but I never heard or saw it before. Politifact has their custom Trump-O-Meter on the link. I'm going to steal shamelessly from their research of promises in Trump's first term, with almost all, my responses. In total they found that Trump kept promises 23% of the time, compromised 22% of the time. Broke promises 53% of the time with 0% stalled. Here's some of his biggest whoppers: Promise: Place lifetime ban on White House officials from lobbying for foreign governments. Action: Trump revoked the lifetime ban on foreign lobbying in a late executive order. Promise: Close parts of the internet where ISIS is. Action: He didn't. Promise: Not take vacations. Action: He, of course, did not mean golfing at his golf resorts counted. Promise: Invest $550 billion in infrastructure and create an infrastructure fund. Action: Not a damn thing but talk. Infrastructure was one of those things that he was going to have a plan come out in two weeks, then another two weeks, and another... Promise: Bring back manufacturing. Action: Promised Michigan auto workers he was going to save a plant. Didn't happen and even more auto workers lost jobs besides that plant. Same for the rest of the country. Promise: Grow the economy by 4% a year. Action: Even before Covid-19, it never did. Promise: Renegotiate the Iran deal. Action: Just canceled the Iran deal that was somewhat working and left us with no leverage, where we are today. Promise: Adopt the penny plan. Action: Abandoned promise to cut spending 1% a year. Promise: Remove all undocumented immigrants. Action: Didn't happen on his first watch, but he's threatening now and deadly serious about carrying it out. Promise: Eliminate wasteful spending in every department. Action: Didn't happen, but he's threatening now with the non-department Department of Government Efficiency. Promise: Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Action: Mexico didn't pay for it and he was in such a snit that he shut down the government for a month because the budget bill didn't give him any money. He eventually stole $8 billion from various government agencies, including the military. Promise: End birthright citizenship. Action: He didn't, but he's at it again. There would have to be another constitutional amendment to repeal that part of the 14th Amendment. Promise: Eliminate the Federal debt in 8 years. Action: Added $7.5 trillion to the debt in 4 years. Promise: Release his tax returns after an audit is completed. Action: Trump said he "might" release his returns "when I'm out of office." At which time it doesn't really matter. He put out the lie that he couldn't release his returns because he was being audited. The IRS, and tax experts, all called it a lie. Promise: Sue his accusers of sexual conduct. Action: They got him first. For reference, Obama kept 47% of his promises. Compromised on 27%. Broke 23% with 0% stalled. CNN article from April 21, 2017 was titled: "Donald Trump just pulled a major flip-flop on his first 100 days in office." "On the 92nd day of his presidency, Donald Trump has decided the idea of his first 100 days in office at as a critical marker is bunk." This is how the Donald put it. All of a sudden the first 100 days is a ridiculous standard. I still haven't figured out what he meant by "media will kill." At a speech in Gettysburg in October of 2016, Trump said, "On Nov. 8th, Americans will be voting for this 100 day plan to restore prosperity to our country, secure our communities and honesty to our government. This is my pledge to you. And if we follow these steps, we will once more have a government of, by and for the people. And more importantly, we will make America great again. Believe me." I wish I could do a Dana Carvey church lady impersonation and say, "What do we call a person who makes promises and breaks them? Liar!?" Donovan sang: "First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is." Trump seems to think that he can do his verbal slight of hand and that nobody will notice it. Let's look at Trump's greatest hits of 2024 during the campaign. Promises listed and most responses are by CBS: Promise: End the war in Ukraine before Inauguration Day. Action: Crickets. When CBS News' Caitlin Huey-Burns asked Trump in late September what the end of the fight in Ukraine would look like, Trump said, "I don't want to tell you what that looks like." When pressed on whether Ukraine should cede land to Russia. Trump pivoted to, "Let's get some peace." Promise: Cut federal funding to schools that teach "critical race theory" and transgender matters. Action: He has suggested launching civil rights investigations into schools that support transgender rights. The Department of Education estimates that only 8% of the funding for public schools comes from federal funds. Promise: Roll back Biden's tax incentives on electrical vehicles. Action: Trump has often said that he would eliminate Biden's electrical vehicle mandate. The problem is that there isn't a mandate. The incentives are designed to get electric cars to be 50% of those sold in the United States by 2030. Changing EPA rules is something Trump could do without Congress. Promise: End taxes on tips. Action: Doing so would require Congress to pass legislation so workers would no longer be subject to federal taxes on those tips. He hasn't said how he would pay for this plan. Promise: No taxes on Social Security income. Action: This also would require legislation and he also hasn't said how he would pay for this change. Promise: "Replace" Obamacare. Action: This is a man who only has concepts of a plan. This is highly unlikely. He hasn't come up with a plan in eight years. Congress would first have to pass a repeal. When the Republicans tried to dismantle it through the courts, the Supreme Court rejected it. Promises from his Agenda 47 website and my responses: Promise: End inflation and make America affordable again. Action: He's already made a fool of himself by saying that he really can't make prices come down. There is no possibility of ever ending inflation, unless you put the country into a depression. You can only keep it under control. And he's getting it at a low rate coming into office. Promise: Make America the dominant energy producer in the world, by far! Action: He doesn't have to do anything, we already are the greatest energy producer in the world. We became the largest producer of crude oil in 2018. Promise: Prevent World War III, restore peace in Europe and the Middle East, and build a great Iron Dome defense shield over our whole country, all made in America. Action: Where do I start? I don't think I even need to comment on anything except the Iron Dome Shield. The Iron Dome Shield is an Israeli missile defense system designed to shoot down the rockets that keep getting lobbed at them from Gaza and Lebanon. It's short range. Absolutely of no use to us. The only thing that would help would be something that could shoot down hypersonic and ballistic missiles. Trump heard that it was a good thing, so, of course, we have to have it too. Promise: Rebuild our cities, including Washington D.C., making them safe, clean, and beautiful again. Action: He had a lot of nasty words about Washington D.C. during the campaign, calling it filthy. They really appreciated that. At least he's finally talking about something that would amount to infrastructure improvements. Promise: Keep men out of women's sports. Action: An invented crisis that strikes home with the MAGA faithful. It's ugly, and it should be beyond Trump's authority, but he will always go as low as he can. Promise: Unite our country by bringing it to new and record levels of success. Action: And pigs can fly. To Trump, "unite" means everybody else loses except the MAGA crowd and his billionaire buddies. Change that. It's just his billionaire buddies. Let's see if mainstream media like CNN and alternative folks like Politifact can keep track of his promises, broken promises and lies. Who knows, maybe the Washington Post will change their direction and keep a running tally of Trump's lies like the 30,573 lies they counted in his first term. I'm not going to hold my breath. Promises and broken promises are easier to track than lies. In counting Trump's lies this year at interviews, debates, and rallies, he reached a new level at times of 2 a minute. You can expect that Trump will break whatever promise he made, with plausible deniability reasoning. He's already done his first flip-flop about not being able to lower prices because it suddenly became very complicated. I think we need an artificial intelligence fact checker to keep up with Trump. No human being has ever been able to do it.
