Panama Cartoon responses [1]

“The Canal is for the Panamanians. Yes, it is ours”. President Mulino in the white beard. I am not sure of the guy behind him.

The second is referencing the mine protests from last year that Canadian First Quantum lost.

“I want the mine. And I the canal.”

I find the Panamanian cartoons of Pretendsident 49% a welcome difference. But chuckling aside, this is being taken pretty seriously here in Panama. In my opinion, the China fears are misplaced. China will not close the canal. They make too much money from it with transport of all the future landfill materials from China to the East Coast. China does indeed have a presence here in Panama. As does France and Japan and Korea. I know of a couple of Jewish schools. And a few Lebanese restaurants. In and around Panama City it is very international. The interior is much more indigenous.

Again my hopes are that Pretendsident 49% stays to form and breaks all his promises and vows. Daily or weekly threats keep him in the news and his cult members angry and fearful. But if it does come to pass here, my husband and I can not be any part of an occupation force. Colombia is close...
