The Path To Winning Back The House Isn't Through Medicare for All [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-14 Don’t get distracted by the far left talking about Medicare for All. It galvanizes the low-information voters, who are primed in a right-wing media sphere, to see single-payer/Medicare for all as communism. It gets them out to vote against us. The goal to winning back the House, Congress, and the White House is to defend the Affordable Care Act in the midterms. Trump wants to dismantle it, and will use the public discussion around single-payer or Medicare for All, to do so. We’d all be playing straight into his hands. Sloganeering kills us and has hurt us. Defund the police. Defund the Ice. Green New Deal. Medicare for All. These are the loser slogans that loses us the squishy middle, the majority of low-information voters, who aren’t as ensconced as we are in the minutae of policy discussions. We can’t fall for the same okey-doke from the far left. Most Americans like their health care insurance. If they think Democrats want to get rid of their health insurance through championing single-payer or Medicare for All, they’ll vote against us accordingly. The reality is that insurance companies are only a small part of the problems we have with our health care system — and the Affordable Care Act caps their profits at around 3%. The last time that Trump tried to kill the Affordable Care Act, Democrats gained 41 seats in the House in 2018. And right now, we have a good chance of taking back the House. What about the Senate though? Over 33 seats will be up for re-election in 2026. 21 of those Senate seats will be defended by Republicans, and at the very best, Democrats will be one seat away from a majority in the Senate. By embracing Medicare for All, and going with the far left, we likely will lose the House, and more seats in the Senate in 2026. The smart thing to do is defend the Affordable Care Act and expand it -— not kill the bill in its entirety in favor of a proposal that will never become reality.
