Friday Night Beer Blog [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-13 Happy Friday beer fans! — Beer news from the UK is bad: There’s a shortage of Guinness! Social media influencers have made Guinness trendy and the brewery can’t keep up with surging demand. Diageo, the company that owns Guinness, has admitted they are trying to "manage the distribution" because of "exceptional demand." According to the BBC, Guinness sales in kegs have increased by 20% compared to last year. This appears to be due to a new trend among Gen Z and millennials, dubbed "splitting the G." The trend involves taking a sip of the Guinness to try and get the foam right in the middle of the "G" on the glass. The rise of the "Guinness influencers” has led to pubs stockpiling the drink, further exacerbating the issue. The good news, however, is if you're in Ireland, you won't struggle to find yourself a pint of the black stuff as the supply shortage is more of an issue outside of Guinness' homeland. Diageo says it's all about “allocation limits,” meaning they have enough available to meet the demand in Ireland. However, the export supply is falling short, and at the moment, there is nothing they can do about it. IIRC Guinness sold in the US is brewed here so we wouldn’t be affected. I know people who have been to Ireland who won’t drink American Guinness. The Irish Star article above didn’t define "splitting the G" correctly; the key part is (from Google) swallow enough beer on their first drink that the line between liquid and foam ends up halfway through the “G” of the Guinness brand on the glass Which means downing around a third of your pint in one big slurp. Slainte! -— I started tonight with “Mai Tai PA” from Alvarado Street Brewery, Salinas CA. IIRC Al Dorado mentions them regularly, they make a lot of the fruit sours that he likes. This is a nice IPA, only 6.5% abv. They don’t name the hops on the label but it probably includes Mosaic for the tropical fruit flavors. I like it a lot. — Beer #2 tonight is something that I knew I’d regret buying more than one of, but Total Wine didn’t have any in the singles section and I had to go for the 4pack. I read an article about Dokkaebier (Oakland CA) in the Bay Area press and I absolutely had to try the Kimchi Sour. It’s very weird but not unpleasant; just barely tart, just barely carbonated, ginger dominates the flavor and at the end the chili comes in. Back to IPA after this; I have some Maui Waui. — What are you drinking? Anyone brewing?
