Eye-Opening Poll on British Regret over Brexit [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-12 The Guardian has a story out today about a really gob smacking poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) regarding closer relations between the UK and EU, based on a survey of more than 9,000 people in both Britain and Europe following Trump's reelection here in the US and the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine. It seems that there is now overwhelming support among the British for closer ties with the EU -- even among those who supported Brexit back in 2016! By a 68-19% margin, Britons would now accept a return to free movement across borders in exchange for regaining access to the single market of the EU. And even among those who voted to Leave the EU in 2016, the margin for Returning stands at 54-35%. Indeed, there is now a substantial majority for this position among supporters of every political party in the UK except Reform (the original proponents of Brexit) -- and even among them it now commands 44% support. The main reason for this dramatic turnaround in public opinion seems to be that "the surge in net migration to the UK after 2016 meant that Brexit was no longer seen by its supporters as the answer on immigration" according to the ECFR report. Interestingly, though Europeans aren't quite so keen on letting the UK back into the EU: [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/12/12/2291519/-Eye-Opening-Poll-on-British-Regret-over-Brexit?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
