Canada joining the USA [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-10 I'm from Canada, but moved to the USA. While we always thought of our 'common' societies, Canadians were always proud to be 'different’ and separate. Yeah, we are more polite, less exploitive, live in colder climate, get paid less, and end up visiting the US all the time anyway. Or cooperation was always voluntary. We formally split from the motherland (England) at different times, in different ways. One violently during colonization, and one peacefully as it was winding down. I do acknowledge that there are Canadians who want this done yesterday, because ‘why not?’ My gut feeling is expansion into Canada (and maybe Mexico) by the USA wouldn't go as the right wing enthusiasts want. And I'd say there would be a few conditions. New States: at least 6 ВС Alberta Saska-toba Ontario Quebec Martimes And two territories • Nunavut and NWT Necessary Modifications to the Constitution, and Other Terms Popular vote for president, no more slave state over representation. More population proportional representation for Senators, differing from the fixed 2 per state that exists today (again no more slave state overweighting) Increase of House of Representatives to 1001 members — to give a finer grain representation in Congress, and every state gets more than they have now (closer to the people) Neutral redistricting commissions for the House districts (why would Canada accept Gerrymandering?) Government sponsored voter enrollment before each election (Canada does/did this — the voter lists are current for almost every election) With a population ratio of 340M:40M, Canada would get at least 12 new senators and about 10% of the House seats, again expanding the House so that everybody gets more representatives than they have now Modification of 2nd amendment to allow states to explicitly regulate all firearms in their states' (gun regulation is strict in Canada), while places like Texas could do what they want Term limits for Supreme Court justices (perhaps 18 years), and an expanded court (15-19 members) — hey it’s going to be a bigger place and the current nomination process if horse hockey Explicit authorization for state limits on election spending, and corporations are not people for purposes of political spending (why would Canada accept the Citizen’s United decision?) Some sort of rump status for Ottawa as a regional government administrative center, as integration progresses, given that Canada has different regulations laws) Explicit eligibility of native born Canadians to run for President (I'm looking at you Ted Cruz) Integration of all major social programs, federal regulatory structures and tax schemes (things like professional licensing are already similar between Canada and the USA I'd also ask for explicit federal money for a number of improved highway and rail connections between the northern US and Canada) No death penalty in Canadian states, even on a federal level French language primacy in Quebec and accommodation in New Brunswick/NovaScotia — oh la la Hey, I jumped ship and came to the US many years ago for opportunity. I could see integration between the two nations as being the next advance. An example to the rest of the world. Maybe we will see a united Africa, and South America at some point. If Mexico were to join, I could see similar changes to expand the union to them. The effect from all this is going to be a large shift of population from the colder/hotter areas to the milder areas. I could see California hitting 60 M people, perhaps needing to be split up just due to population. DC + Puerto Rico I am reminded by others, that DC and PR need statehood, too. 58 states then!
