Say It Ain’t So, Joe [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-12-02 Dear Mr. President, I was surprised when you said that you would not pardon your son. Hunter Biden, back in June 2023. I thought, “Wow, what an amazing commitment to the Rule of Law and a willingness to have Hunter face the consequences of his actions.” I’m not sure I could have made that commitment. You publicly reaffirmed your decision on June 6, 2024, and perhaps on other occasions. And White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reaffirmed your decision on six different occasions, including November 7, 2024. You never needed to make that commitment. You could have said that you had not given a pardon consideration as the cases were ongoing and sentencing was outstanding. You could have commuted his two sentences and then pardoned him apart from those as you did to prevent the Republicans from coming after him in the years ahead for imagined or real offenses in the past decade. And if you were going to pardon, he should have been included among a number of other pardons of people who deserved them. Of course, Trump pardoned Jared Kushner’s father, Charles, on December 23, 2020, as he was leaving office, and then just appointed him, a convicted felon, as the ambassador to France because Trump really hates France. Trump will use your lie to prove and justify all sorts of things. He has already asked if your pardon should have included those “falsely” imprisoned in the aftermath of January 6. At a minimum, the Liar in Chief can assert that all Presidents lie. You are leaving the field of battle, but the rest of us have no choice but to continue to fight. My disappointment is not in the pardon but in the lie.
