An interesting and relevant article about John Adams, the XYZ Affair, and the Alien and Sedition act [1]

I just read this article by Thom Hartmann and thought I should share. I also intend to purchase the book that the author published, because this is a part of US history that I have developed an interest in.

The TL:DR is that John Adams and the Federalist party used the ‘XYZ affair’ to drum up a war scare with France, pass authoritarian legislation, imprison legislators who spoke out against it, and shut down newspapers that opposed his policies, and that when the pendulum swung back against him, it was very unforgiving. The article explains how and why.

This is obviously relevant to our current situation.
