You're Fired [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-26 I’m trying to figure out how this mass firing of all government bureaucrats is going to work. On his TV show, Trump could yell “You’re Fired!” and the person would disappear. But actual firing is much more complicated. Trump has no idea how to fire someone. When you fire someone, you rely on others to handle the details. For example, the fired people have to turn in their keys and ID badges. But to whom, if the key people and the HR people have also been fired? Who will arrange for computers to get new passwords, and who will teach the new people how to use them, if IT has also been fired? In a normal transition these details would have been handled in advance, so the new folks can show up on Jan 22 and get to work. But as was the case in 2016, Trump has shown no interest in learning anything from the people who preceded him. And he refuses to sign the conflict of interest statement, so the current employees cannot cooperate with new people anyway. So I have an idea. When Trump says, during his inaugural speech (to the largest crowd ever assembled), that everyone is fired, they should take him at his word and go home. Can you imagine, the next day, Pete Hegseth shows up at the Pentagon and can’t get in, because it is locked? He’ll be wandering all over, trying all the doors, but everyone is fired, so there is no one there to help him. And best of all, the employees will keep getting paid, because no one is there to turn off the paycheck. It’s all legal, and no one can stop it, because they are under contract and without a document saying that they are not, they still are. The new people, in the meantime, have no idea where to go and what to do, and they are NOT being paid because there is no one who knows how to turn on a paycheck. It’s better than a strike, because the paychecks keep coming! Unless, of course, the people at Treasury also stop working. I like this plan because the Trump people quickly learn that they cannot accomplish anything without a bureaucracy to help them do it, including people who know how things work. But the downside is that the government stops working, and of course there are people who rely on the government working. But if Elon and Vivek are going to cut $2 trillion from the budget, it’s going to stop anyway. The other thing about this is that when everything grinds to a halt, it is crystal clear whose fault it is. And when the money stops flowing, even the MAGAs will realize how much they rely on the government.
