The Assault on American Values Commences [1]

I remember my anger over evangelical ministers promoting Trump. I marveled that the law regarding non-profit status was not enforced. I wrote at the time that non-enforcement encourages greater violations. The Republicans are playing for keeps, still skirting the rules, ever bolder. Now, the republicans feel empowered to up their game and stifle dissent. They have a plan, doable, though it is fascist, revokes human rights and dooms our system of government. They are attacking on all fronts, defining the issues, while democrats are continually stunned, mute, in full defensive mode.

On Thursday, the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a terrifying bill that would give the Trump administration the power to revoke the nonprofit status of any organization that dares to oppose his agenda simply by labeling the group "terrorist supporting." The bill was born of “anti-Palestinian racism but Trump will broadly use H.R. 9495 to advance his agenda, creating more fear and shutting down other points of view, all without due process. Legal scholars call it "a civil rights disaster" and a "nonprofit killer."

For example, as the new republican administration enters, stage left, many environmental groups oppose actions of Big Oil, because history has shown that BigOil pays little in royalties, spoils the land's beauty, pollutes ground water and avoids responsibility for remediation, foisting that instead on the taxpayers. Science clearly shows the resulting CO2 emissions will make the earth uninhabitable and sterile within what otherwise would have been our children's lifetimes. Like most of his predecessors, Trump serves BigOil. The environmental non-profits may be the first to go if this bill is passed by the senate. No president should be trusted with that kind of power, much less a man who vowed to punish his political opponents.

15 House Democrats actually voted for the bill on Thursday. They are fools who never look under the mask to discern the motive, yet we pay them to protect us. The Senate is older, wiser, more experienced, and more aware than the house. I pray they see through this draconian assault on free speech and ludicrous overreach of executive power.

Those who sponsored and voted Aye for this bill didn't seriously consider the unanticipated consequences. This is a new world, with new rules. Trump will use this as a weapon, as intended.

Warning - This is but the first of a series of rather innocuous bills containing hidden bombs with far-reaching effects. They are intended to further empower the president, while dampening or eliminating free speech and opposition. Non-profits are low-hanging fruit, relatively easy to destroy, but assaults on media, Congress, SCOTUS and opposing individuals will follow as Project 2025 unfolds. All are ripe and vulnerable.
