Secret recordings give glimpse of Madigan’s take on Burke, food and football by Jon Seidel and Dave McKinney Chicago Ald. Edward M. Burke spent years trying to use Danny Solis to lure private business from the developers of Chicago’s Old Post Office, asking Solis if he’d landed “the tuna” and insisting the developers could “go f— themselves” when they didn’t throw work Burke’s way. He wasn’t alone. Then-Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan told Solis on June 20, 2018 that he’d “been trying all kinds of lines to get to know” the project’s lead developer. Solis warned that Burke had tried too, but still, Solis predicted Madigan’s law partner would “impress the hell” out of the developer. Solis quipped that “it’s very different from when Ed meets someone.” And then, Madigan broke out in jubilant laughter when Solis suggested the men had “different styles.” “That’s a good way to say it!” Madigan told him. A federal jury watched video Tuesday of one of the city’s most entrenched, powerful and old-school politicians joking about another as prosecutors continued to lay out their case against Madigan, who is now on trial. They played more than 30 recordings that allegedly show Madigan — like Burke — tried to use Solis to illegally steer business to his law firm. CNN: What could get more expensive if Trump launches a new trade war with Mexico and Canada by Elisabeth Buchwald During President-elect Donald Trump’s first term, America launched an all-out trade war with China to boost US manufacturing, secure US national security interests and resolve what Trump believed was an extremely out-of-balance trade relationship. President Joe Biden kept most of those tariffs in place and added a few new ones, too. While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now, Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. And he’s promising something extraordinary: Come January 20, the day Trump is set to be inaugurated, he pledges he will slap a new, 25%, across-the-board tariff on all goods the US imports from its closest neighbors — goods that are almost all coming across the border for free because of the Trump-negotiated US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. Translation: Brace yourself for a potential trade war that could seriously lighten your wallet. NBC News: Millions to hit the roads for Thanksgiving ahead of 'Arctic' temperatures Thursday by Patrick Smith and Mirna Alsharif Millions of travelers Tuesday will battle severe weather and congested highways to reach loved ones for Thanksgiving. And according to forecasters, for many, it's going to be a cold one. The National Weather Service said in an update early Monday that a pair of weather systems were expected to bring an "Arctic outbreak" across the Central United States on Wednesday and into Thanksgiving. And while there haven't been reports of widespread disruptions so far, air travelers in particular may face serious problems Tuesday, near the peak of the travel period. Newark Liberty International could order a ground stop up until 10 p.m. ET, stranding passengers, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The warning of delays is due to a shortage of air traffic control staff. USA Today: 22 arrested in Pennsylvania in connection to alleged human trafficking at massage parlors by Fernando Cervantes Jr. Twenty-two people were arrested in Pennsylvania in connection to a human trafficking operation tied to two massage businesses, officials said. The District Attorney for Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Seán M. McCormack said in a press release Tuesday that the arrests were made across multiple operations over the last month. Officials also said that more arrests are expected in connection to this operation. Called Closed2Trafficking, the operation seeks to “focus on illegal commercial sexual trafficking and exploitation of individuals," according to the press release. It was conducted with continuing operations called Impact Demand, which seeks to target the customers of the sex trade, officials said. The attorney’s office said it had executed search warrants at two area massage parlors: GL Massage and Li’s Asian Massage, both located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. BBC News: What we know about Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire deal US President Joe Biden has announced a ceasefire deal to end 13 months of fighting between Israel and with Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia supported by Iran. In a joint statement, the US and France said the agreement would cease fighting in Lebanon and "secure Israel from the threat of Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations". This is what we know about the ceasefire deal from official briefings and media reports. US President Joe Biden told reporters that the agreement was "designed to be a permanent ceasefire". Under the terms of the ceasefire, over 60 days Hezbollah will remove its fighters and weapons from the area between the Blue Line - the unofficial border between Lebanon and Israel - and the Litani river, about 30km (20 miles) to the north. Hezbollah fighters will be replaced by Lebanese army forces in that area, who will ensure that infrastructure or weaponry is removed and that it cannot be rebuilt, according to a senior US official. AlJazeera: Imran Khan calls for ‘fight till the end’ as Pakistan gov’t rules out talks by Abid Hussain Imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged his supporters to “fight till the end” as Pakistani authorities cracked down on protesters calling for his release. Security forces on Tuesday clashed with supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party who broke through barriers as they marched towards the centre of the locked-down capital, Islamabad, in an attempt to stage a sit-in. The protesters are demanding the return of what they call a “stolen mandate” after February’s elections, the release of political prisoners and the reversal of a constitutional amendment that allows a civilian government to call in the army to help it implement “law and order”. In a post on social media, Khan told protesters to remain peaceful and united, saying their struggle is for Pakistan’s “survival and true freedom”. As tensions rose, the government dismissed prospects of “further dialogue” with the PTI and accused Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, of orchestrating the unrest. Guardian: Power cuts in Ukraine after Russia’s biggest drone attack yet by Shaun Walker, Helena Smith, and Dan Sabbagh Russia launched its biggest ever drone attack on Ukraine on Monday night and Tuesday morning, sending a reported 188 drones into the country against various targets, resulting in power cuts in part of western Ukraine and damage to residential buildings outside Kyiv. Russian forces are pushing hard along the frontline in the east of the country, amid uncertainty as to how the dynamics of the war might change once Donald Trump takes office in January. Russia also vowed “retaliatory actions” for fresh Ukrainian strikes on military targets inside Russia that used long-range missiles sent by the US. Ukraine’s air force said 76 of the drones had been shot down overnight, as air defences struggled to cope with the massed attacks that have become common in recent weeks. “Unfortunately, there were hits to critical infrastructure facilities, and private and apartment buildings were damaged in several regions due to the massive drone attack,” the air force said in a statement.
