Felon No More [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-26 For Americans who value freedom and democracy, the coming Trump years will be very difficult. In March of 2017, at the beginning of his first term in office, one of the primary goals of his administration was stated to be “Deconstruction of the administrative state”. While this was not accomplished during Trump Term 1, because of that administration’s lack of governing experience and the presence of adults in some of the rooms, now, even before he has been sworn in, his cabinet appointments of people hostile to the objectives of the departments they will head indicate that he intends to complete the job during Term 2. And today’s justice department announcement that all the charges against Trump have been dropped: for trying to incite an insurrection in order to stay in power; and for stealing and hiding classified documents after leaving office, are further validation that he is indeed above the law. Even his sentence for the felony for which he has already been convicted (paying off Stormy Daniels to hide his affair with her before the 2016 election) has been “postponed” until after he leaves office. It indeed seems that his long-ago contention that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it may well be true. Think about it. The president of the United States of America – supposedly the standard bearer of America’s values – has just demonstrated that, if you are brazen enough, rich enough and powerful enough, you can break the law - even be convicted - and get away with it. What kind of a message does that send? Of course, Trump contends that all these charges were politically motivated, and is no doubt already planning to seek retribution from those who supposedly attacked him. When he does, it will be important to remind those who support those actions to remember that you and they witnessed the violence at the Capital on January 6th 2021, the photos of the boxes of documents in the bathroom and on the stage at Mar a Lago and also the phone call asking the Georgia Secretary of State to find 11,780 votes. In the meantime, hang on to your hats and hope for the best. Because Autocracy is here.
