"Crockett calls for border czar Homan to be confirmed by Senate" -- Gross Misdirection from The Hill [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-26 I did a real double take when I saw this headline from The Hill today, purporting to be from progressive icon Jasmine Crockett of Texas and apparently supporting the nomination of notorious anti-immigration activist and deportation enthusiast Tom Homan to be Trump’s “Border Czar.” Homan had served as the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in Trump’s previous administration, and was one of the most ardent supporters of the hideous policy of family separation as a tactic to deter “illegal” immigration across our southern border with Mexico. So how could Crockett possibly support such an outrageous nomination? Short answer of course is that she doesn’t, but you would have to read far down this perversely misleading piece to find that out: Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) called for President-elect Trump’s new border czar Tom Homan to be confirmed by the Senate. “I do think that if they are going to implore him with the type of power that he believes that he’s going to have, then he should absolutely be confirmed by the Senate,” Crockett said Tuesday on CNN. Homan previously served as the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Shortly after Trump won the election earlier this month, Homan was selected for the new position of “border czar.” Trump, for months, promised to launch the country’s largest deportation operation. Homan said he will follow through on that promise and has engaged in a back-and-forth with Denver Mayor Mike Johnston over the issue, stating he will jail the mayor if he refuses to participate in deportations. In 2019, Trump sent a nomination to the Senate for Homan to formally lead ICE, but Homan withdrew his nomination rather than face a Senate confirmation process. Now, in his newest position, he won’t have to face the confirmation process that all of Trump’s Cabinet will endure. The border czar position is not an official government title, but Homan is expected to oversee day-to-day operations and strategy on border security and enforcement in an adviser capacity. Only with those last two sentences do we start to have an inkling of what is actually going on here — “Border Czar” isn’t actually a real position needing Senate confirmation, even though it would direct the overall border security and deportation strategy. Continuing on: Crockett argued Tuesday that someone like Homan with the power granted to him in the new position should go through the same process as Trump’s other nominees. “At the end of the day, he should have to go through the same level of scrutiny if he is going to get this type of power,” she said. So instead of implying that Hoffman should actually be confirmed by the Senate, Crockett is advocating the exact opposite — that he should be subject to the same process of advice and consent in the Senate that he managed to duck back in 2019, where hopefully his nomination could be successfully derailed in the public confirmation hearings. But you would never have a clue if you just perused The Hill’s disgustingly disingenuous headline and failed to read the entire article to the very end. Clearly this isn’t even a pretense of journalism or honest reporting — just another attempt to sow confusion and chaos within progressive circles it would seem.
