Teaching the Bible in Public Schools [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-24 Oklahoma plans on teaching the Bible in grade school, starting with kindergarten, and Texas is following suit. However, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin is concerned. He is worried that the teachers “may not be believers.” I suppose he means that some of the teachers may be atheists. If so, his fears are misplaced. An atheist can teach stories from the Bible much in the way he might teach stories about the gods of ancient Greece, in a straightforward manner without feeling any need to say that he doesn’t believe that Pegasus actually exists or that Hermes stole the cattle of Apollo. Of course, just as there are parts of the Bible that are not suitable for children, so too are there stories in Greek mythology that would not be appropriate for children either, but even an atheist would know to avoid them. However, Mullin adds that he is worried about “teaching the word that can easily be taken out of context.” In that case, in using the expression, “may not be believers,” Mullin may have something else in mind, something other than atheism. Rather, it may be that he is worried that a teacher may count himself a Christian, and yet not believe in the right way. For that reason, Mullin says that those that teach the Bible in public school must be graduates of a seminary school. Of course, it would have to be the right kind of seminary school, one whose graduates understand the Bible in the right way. Fortunately, Mullin knows what the right way is to teach the Bible, in a manner that conforms to a correct understanding of Christianity and the nature of God, and thus he will be able to determine which seminary schools are suitable and which ones must be disqualified. You have to envy someone like Senator Mullin. It must be nice to know what God wants, and nicer still to know that you and God are always in complete agreement.
