It’s Time for Outgoing Democrats to Play Hardball

From The Bulwark is a powerful argument for Democrats to use the lame duck session to stop being nice and make it harder for the Future TFG to wreck things. The Bulwark is a Never Trump Republican website, but I see nobody else making such creative suggestions about fighting the coming autocracy. Sticking to traditional behavior is not the way to stop a soon-to-be dictator unless there is a BIG fight by all to stop it. Several suggestions:

Biden should “use the pardon power liberally, not to benefit his cronies but rather for the ethical and moral reason of protecting his supporters and allies from Trump’s revenge. Everyone from Liz Cheney to Gen. Mark Milley should be offered...protection”

For Biden, “All options—to skip the inauguration, to provide more weapons to Ukraine, to make legally binding commitments to NATO, and still others—should be on the table.”

”the unions representing civil servants sued preemptively (in, as the Republicans are wont to do, a district where a favorable jurist sits) to seek a declaratory judgment that Trump’s legal interpretation [of Schedule F] was wrong.”

(Schedule F, if implemented by Trump by executive order, would turn the top level civil servants into political positions. He would then fire them all and fill the positions with his lackeys. It would be harder to do if a declaratory judgment saying that action is illegal.)

The Democratic Senate “should also hold preemptive hearings on Trump’s worst cabinet picks and most odious policy proposals” while they can.

I urge all of you to email or call your Senators (202-224-3121) and the President (202-456-1111)

to suggest that they implement these ideas.
