Russian stuff blowing up: Russia launches a ballistic missile at the city of Dnipro [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-21 Russia last night launched an RS-26 Rubezh ICBM at the city of Dnipro, the first time an ICBM (or IRBM, see debate below) has been fired against another country. The missile had a conventional warhead with six MIRVs (multiple independent re-entry vehicles). Dnipro has about a million residents. The ICBM was launched from Astrakhan, about 1,200 km southeast of Dnipro in the delta of the Volga River. Russia also launched seven KH-101 cruise missiles and a KH-47M2 Kinzhal cruise missile at Dnipro. Six of the KH-101 missiles were shot down. x The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russia struck the Ukrainian city of Dnipro with a conventionally armed ICBM this morning, marking the first combat use of an ICBM in history. Footage from Dnipro showed glowing reentry vehicles hitting the ground around 5 AM local time. pic.twitter.com/PWTGajH9bT — OSINTtechnical (@Osinttechnical) November 21, 2024 x New video shows Russian ICBM strike against Dnipro this morning. If this is what happened, it would seem Russia’s goal was to send a message — we still have ICBMs and we can use nuclear warheads on them if we choose. In other words, this was a political move. x This is my best guess on the makeup of the warhead that was carried by the RS-26 "Rubezh" last night. I believe it contained 6 inert simulated warheads with the shape and weight of a nuclear warhead that are intended solely for testing of the system. To save money, the casings on the warheads were made from mild steel or some other alloy and not the heat resistant reentry casing that a live warhead would have. Because of this, each of the six warheads broke up upon reentry. Each of the test warheads would probably have contained several steel, lead or other allow weights in them which could be changed-out depending on the total weight required for the warhead being tested. Upon reentry, the casings disintegrated from the heat created by friction with the atmosphere and the weights within them separated and can seen making the effect seen in the videos and images of the strike. The difference is in the range. The RS-26 did exceed the minimum range of 5,500 kilometers required for ICBM status in a test flight. The only real difference it makes in how the missile is designated is that if this is considered an IRBM, it would be a violation of the INF Treaty that Russia signed (and left in 2011) that was supposed to eliminate all intermediate range missiles. x Russia launched something awful at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, home to nearly 1 million people. But here we are. x I agree, except it was a MRV payload, NOT MIRV payload. They all struck the same target. To be MIRV, the separate vehicles need to be able strike INDEPENDENT targets, not the same target. — Aperture Geopolitics (@AperatureFinTek) November 21, 2024 Hot mic x ‼ Russia’s MFA press-alchaché Maria Zakharova received a call from the higher-ups during a briefing, ordering her not to comment on Russia’s strike on Ukraine with an intercontinental ballistic missile. THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is an anti-missile defense system that intercepts short and intermediate range ballistic missiles upon re-entry. x The right response from Biden to Russia using that missile on Ukraine today should be to send a THAAD and several Patriot air-defense systems to Ukraine with crew. Like they did for Israel. Along with a shit-load of ATACMS and JASSM missiles to use in Russia. — Kvist.P 🇩🇰🇺🇦 (@kvistp) November 21, 2024 x THAAD for Ukraine pic.twitter.com/fYTYaKubLr — Slava 🇺🇦 (@Heroiam_Slava) November 21, 2024 Ukraine retaliated against the Russian city where the RS-26 was launched.
