Renewable Tuesday: COP29 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-19 COP29 opened in Baku, Azerbaijan on Nov. 11 to global yawns from most, and hair-on-fire concern from some. It will run until the 22nd. So I am devoting this entire post to it, and to the Trump and Heritage Foundation plan for maximum denial of any fact or actions being taken. Project 2025 says that Global Warming is a hoax, and that every Federal Agency reporting on it or trying to do something about it should be shut down, especially NOAA. The Heritage Foundation demands that Trump become King SuperCanute, holding back not just the tides, but rising seas and temperatures and everything else. The Weather Channel: Will 2024 Be The Warmest Year on Record For Earth? NOAA Says Yes NYT: Exxon Chief to Trump: Don’t Withdraw From Paris Climate Deal That’s the background for this event. But enough of bad news. Let’s look at the good news. NPR: Energy experts share how the U.S. can reach Biden's renewable energy goals We have many such plans, focusing on various aspects of the problem. Renewable energy, storage, and EVs, of course, but also fire, flood, drought, melting ice, melting permafrost, rising seas, and so on. 100% renewable energy by 2035. Then we can start to cut back on oil and gas production and consumption, and leave all the rest of it in the ground. Politico: Explaining the trillion dollar question that’s disrupting COP29 This year’s global climate talks are all about the money needed to prevent the effects of global warming from accelerating. The nearly 200 countries represented here need to agree over the coming week how much money they can deliver every year. Halfway through the talks, they remain far apart — anywhere from about $100 billion to $2 trillion in potential pledges annually. Yes? So what’s new? And why is this good news? Aha! What’s new is that they are talking about actual numbers this big at all. Now this whole argument is bogus. The world stands to make tens of trillions of dollars a YEAR in Real MoneyTM from lower-cost renewable energy, EVs, and the rest, so investing $2 trillion is peanuts. So why not make the investment? Because of a century of corruption of almost every goverrment on the planet by the lying, Oil and Gaslighting Fossil Foolishness industry. They are trying to protect no more than $10 trillion of imaginary money locked up in stranded assets, and refusing to accept vastly more money that shines down from the sky and blows past in the wind. Why would I lie? Life’s bad enough without making up more of it. Marvin the Paranoid Android, HHGTTG Well, never mind them. And never mind the official schedule of events at the do. The real action is among the activists calling for far greater action on every front. x 'This is a disgrace': Former US Vice President Al Gore railed against the fossil fuel industry in a fiery speech at the #COP29 summit https://t.co/TmEOxkbA1G No time to waste. #ActOnClimate#climate #energy #renewables #Cop29 pic.twitter.com/jRLOXq6Fck — Mike Hudema (@MikeHudema) November 18, 2024 x ❗️ We condemn the violence against imprisoned female journalists Sevinj Vagifqizi, Elnara Gasimova, and Nargiz Absalamova in Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 ⚠️ Subjected to degrading treatment and inhumane conditions, reports suggest they may begin a hunger strike to protest their abuse.
