Fun Facts for Fascist Fans! [1]

These days we hear a lot about Trump being America’s Hitler and analogies between the recent election and the collapse of democracy in Germany in 1933, but did you know that:

1. Hitler never won a majority of the popular vote in a free election. In the March 1932 presidential election, he lost to Hindenburg 49% to 30%, and in the subsequent runoff (the Wiemar constitution required the president to be elected by an absolute majority,) Hitler lost again, by roughly 6 million votes, 53% to 37%.

Whereas on November 5, we elected our Hitler (according to the latest count I’ve seen,) with a majority or something very close to it.

2. Unlike our beloved Republican Party, the Nazis Party never won a majority of the Reichstag (the Wiemar legislature) in a free election, or even came close. Their peak was in the July 1933 elections, when they won 230 out of 608 seats, making the Nazis the largest party with 37% of the vote, but still far from a majority. In Wiemar’s last free election, in November 1933, the Nazi total dropped by 2 million votes and 34 seats.

And don’t forget that 1932-33 was the low point of the Great Depression in Germany, with unemployment at an incredible 30%, so the Germans were experiencing real economic hardship, unlike the situation here. Even so, they never voted the Nazis into power.

So, what’s our excuse?
