Silver lining in all this (for Canada) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-16 It seems to me that there is a terrific opportunity during the next 4 years for our friends north of the border. Canada seems to have a well-thought-out immigration system, targeting the young and well-educated as well as those in specific trades and occupations. First, they seem to need physicians. If they further restrict women’s health across the United States, Canada might be able to poach a number of OB-GYNs and even some general practitioners. Maybe more. Quite a few OB-GYNs have already left states like Idaho and Texas. Second, if the deportation program gets going and they target DACA recipients, more opportunities might arise for Canada. Many DACA recipients are well-educated and making their mark in fields from medicine to science to engineering to, well, everything. Many have grown up without Spanish. Canada might utilize their talents in a more minority-friendly and less misogynistic environment. Third, the poaching could well extend to entire companies. With anti-vaxer RFK Jr running healthcare, companies like Moderna and Novavax might consider moving all or part of their operations to the north. Then, when the next Pandemic comes along, Canadians would be first in line for the most advanced vaccine technologies on the planet. Hopefully, Canadians would be willing to share if a vaccine distribution system were still in place or could be reconstituted in the U.S. Fourth, government scientists from the CDC to the National Weather Service may soon be personas-non-grata. Trump does not deal well with facts. Canada might be happy to get at least some of these people. Fifth, women now avoiding MAGA dudes might find some more palatable and respectful potential partners to our north. Although admittedly, the available male Canadian population is probably not anywhere near large enough to meet demand. Finally (not actually finally as there are probably many other examples), the U.S. intelligence services under Tulsi Gabbard will no longer have a function, as all secret documents that cross the Gabbard desk will go straight to Putin. Some of those experts and systems might find a good welcome up north. Canada is apparently cutting back a bit on immigration but there is probably room for a good number of the best and brightest that we apparently no longer want.
