It's Time to Work the Refs [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-16 I’m an expat living in Canada. I’m blissfully free of most US media coverage, but NPR does reach across the border. I listen maybe once a week when I’m shopping for groceries. Even with that tiny amount of exposure, I was furious with NPRs coverage the entire election season. Just a few examples — after Trump’s tariffs plan came out, they invited on a pro-Trump CEO to explain why this plan was good for America, with no counter voice. During a foreign policy panel, they joked “Trump’s foreign policy is America first.” Then spent a long time talking about how Harris “had to rely” on one of her advisors for foreign policy. It was deeply misogynistic and condescending — she’s the damn vice president of the United States. The entire campaign season was like this, just awful awful, biased coverage on NPR. I can only imagine what other media sources were like. How did we get here? Republicans have spent decades attacking the press whenever they don’t get coverage they like. From our side? Crickets. That’s left an entire media environment where the unspoken rule is you have to be nice to Republicans, but not to Dems because they don’t fight back. That permeates the entire culture, and is what we have to fight against. Hear a bad take on the radio? Call in and argue. Meet the Press has two Republicans for every Democrat? Tell them you’re sick of it. Even more importantly, contact their advertisers and tell them you’re paying attention. Do you get Fox News on your cable? Tell your provider to get rid of it, and if they can’t, you’ll cancel your subscription. Then follow through. Otherwise you’re giving 30 dollars a year, every year, to Rupert F*&#ing Murdoch. The only sign of life I’ve ever seen from our side was the Washington Post cancellation tsunami. More of this, please. Support good local reporting. Support good podcasts — move our side up the charts, so random people might hear our side. Downvote every shitty youtube clip you see in your feed. It’s time for these assholes to be scared of us. It won’t change overnight. If we keep at it, it will change. 2/3 of America is on our side when it comes to policy. They just don’t trust us, because they don’t see us fight. It’s time to work the refs in the cause of good. It won’t happen overnight, but if we keep at it, it will happen. Republicans are relentless when it comes to working the media. It’s time for us to take that page out of their playbook. Never give up. Never surrender.
