[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-14 We saw last week that a substantial number of Arab and Muslim voters broke with the Democratic Party and voted for Donald Trump or Jill Stein over Kamala Harris. It hasn’t taken long for buyer’s remorse to set in. The New York Times is reporting on reaction to Trump’s initial picks for foreign policy. If you’re a subscriber, you can see that story here; if not, you can see the archived version here. But some key bits: including Arab and Muslim voters who sided with Mr. Trump as a rebuke to the Biden administration’s support of Israel in its war in Gaza. Some Muslim supporters, such as Rabiul Chowdhury, a founder of Muslims for Trump, said they had been led to believe that , Mr. Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and onetime acting intelligence chief, would be made secretary of state. But Mr. Trump’s foreign policy picks have dismayed liberal Jews and Arab Americans alike,as a rebuke to the Biden administration’s support of Israel in its war in Gaza. Some Muslim supporters, such as Rabiul Chowdhury, a founder of Muslims for Trump, said they had been led to believe that the man leading the outreach to them, Richard Grenell , Mr. Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and onetime acting intelligence chief, would be made secretary of state. Samraa Luqman, an environmental justice activist in Dearborn, Mich., and a co-chair of the Abandon Harris campaign among Arab American voters, said she still believed “anything is better” than the Biden administration officials who “led us into a downward spiral in the last year or so.” But she conceded, “I’m not thrilled about the appointments of war hawks and neo-cons, and have been very vocal about my support for Ambassador Richard Grenell to become the next secretary of state.” Surprise, surprise! As for Luqman, I’ll say flat out that anyone who claims to be an “environmental justice activist” and supports Donald Trump is either an idiot or a liar. Period. That said, there were some who saw through the ruse prior to the election: , said she was not surprised by what she likened to a bait-and-switch. Layla Elabed, a founder of Uncommitted, a Palestinian-rights group that initially broke with Democrats and then just weeks before Election Day declared that another Trump presidency would be worse than a Kamala Harris one , said she was not surprised by what she likened to a bait-and-switch. “Trump’s team lied to a community in anger and despair?” she asked ironically. “Isn’t that his whole thing?” I’d say that Ms. Elabed got that exactly right. It’s a shame that so many others did not recognize the reality that she saw. And for the college students who protested what was being done to the Gaza strip last year and who withheld their support from Harris in the past election, I’m sure that they’re delighted by the choice of Elise Stefanik as Trump’s pick for UN ambassador. Oh, wait: Ms. Stefanik has led Republican attacks on university presidents over antisemitism on campuses where pro-Palestinian protests flourished after Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel started the continuing wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Maybe those protesters should have supported Harris after all… Once again, the truism about voting for the “Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party” is again being proven right. Unfortunately, an awful lot of people who didn’t vote for that party are also going to get their faces eaten.
