[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-09 When asking “What went wrong” with the 2024 election, you are failing to answer the question if you do not examine the Department of Justice 2020-2024. This, also, is a failure the Democratic Party must learn from, as important to learn from as any discussion of news media shortfalls, inflation, or any other issue. Had the DOJ performed its mission, the winner of the 2024 Presidential election might conceivably already be in jail, and unable to have run, for crimes (if proven) around attempting to overturn the 2020 election. As well, many of those who are or were in his inner circle might also have been convicted, giving “GOP is the party of sedition” the weight of multiple high-level, public convictions. To be clear, none of this is certain. It is not yet proven that the J6 uprising was not just a random riot…that coincidentally happened to involve a bomber (who is not yet found). But you must either believe that, or you must believe (as is likely) that the thing was planned, and that the DOJ has totally and historically failed its mission in finding those planners. And now, it seems it never will. (What will become of Jack Smith’s six unindicted co-conspirators, whom no one ever seemed to show any interest in indicting? We will see, but I’ll bet you are with me in not being optimistic. The DOJ has finally run out of time. Who would ever have thought such a thing might happen?) The lessons learned are these: 1. Do not be afraid to criticize a Democratic administration for non-performance, when it is justified. 2. Listen to your instincts. Do not be “calmed” by the words of those who “know better”. 3. Marcy Wheeler does not “know better”. She is not a lawyer, and should not have been listened to above those who were. 4. Recognize that dammitall, failure is not an option. When people break the law in a way that threatens national security, they must be brought to justice in a timely manner. Accept no excuses. Recognize that the American people deserve this. Here is hoping the time will come when these lessons will mean something.
