We Have Run Out of Time [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-09 In the last few days there has been a lot written on DK urging each other to stay strong, keep up the fight, look to the future. We lost this time, but we’ve lost before and come back to win the next time. We can do that again. Over some sixty year of progressive political activism, that kind of thinking has been at the core of my approach, and it has worked out pretty well, On issues from abortion rights, to economic justice, to voting rights, to business regulation, to tax fairness, to clean water and air, we have make gradual, if sporadic progress. We have often lost battles, but then come back later to win them later. Unfortunately, something has changed. Climate change, in just last couple of years, has begun to make itself clearly and dramatically obvious. Because there is a 20 year time lag built into the warming we experience (that’s how long it takes for the co2 that we emit today to be fully reflected in rising temperatures) these recent trends are absolutely certain to continue and worsen. Have you noticed how every article you read or video you see about some new heat record, ice melting, or other climate impact contains some line like “sooner than expected,” “earlier than previously forecast,” or “faster than models had forecast ? ” We will continue to have more category 5 hurricanes, massive wildfires, 100 year floods every 2 years, sea level rise, extensive droughts, crop failures, and famines. These impacts are large, growing, and accelerating, and they will soon be overwhelming all other issues. We won’t really care what the Supreme Court says about rights when we no longer have electricity, or food in the grocery stores. The election of Trump marks the end of all efforts to stop, slow, or mitigate the impacts of climate change. This is not something that we can fix next time, because there will be no next time. We, the people, have decided to ignore reality, but reality will come for us. Time will run out before we have a chance to reverse the Trump damage.
