Trump's Achilles' Heel [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-08 It’s natural to feel despondent or fearful in these days. But let us not be too downhearted. Trump is in the process of destroying the gains he and his cabal have made. And the thing that will injure him most are those projects most dear to him. He campaigned on inflation. Ironic really because the inflation he will unleash will evoke the worst of the late 70’s. First will be the tariffs, a subject upon which he is fixated. Every decent economist points out that this is an insane idea that could cost the average citizen about $4000. It’s the royal road to inflation. Second, mass deportation. About 40% of all construction is estimated to be done by undocumented immigrants. There are over 280,000 such workers in agriculture. Similar numbers exist in many aspects of the labor market. A drive to deport large numbers of workers will lead to a considerable increase in labor costs, itself inflationary, and shortages in basic grocery items, another source of inflation. Adding those two factors together will result in pretty vicious inflation with a concomitant rise in interest rates. In 2026, we may well see this process underway. Well may our candidates ask consumers if they are better off than in 2024. So our focus must be the economy, the economy and the economy. Republicans always overreach. We should be ready.
