If there was ever an election for Republicans to swap sides and vote Democratic, this was it. This election was the most stark I’ve ever seen. It was a clear choice between good and evil, and Republicans didn’t budge. They voted the same as before and in roughly the same numbers as before.

Looking at the data I’ve seen so far, I think we pursued the wrong strategy. Republicans are not listening to us, at least not until they get out of their echo chamber. Since they are not listening, spending resources to get them to change their vote was a waste of resources. The time spent with Liz Cheney would have been great in 1984, but in 2024 it was a waste of time. The speaking slots given to Republicans at the Democratic convention were wasted opportunities.

There is a silver lining here.

We also know that Republicans are not listening to us, and that goes both ways. There won’t be any backlash from Republicans if we change strategy and focus on building the left-wing base. We should focus our time, energy, and money on building trust with left-wing factions that didn’t turn out to vote this election.

I’m still disappointed they didn’t turn out to vote. I’m not entirely sure what the best course of action is. Perhaps when we have more data, a road forward will present itself. We may need to change some of our policy positions. But if they are at least willing to listen and talk with us, there is a chance we could get them to turn out in the next election. And that’s a better chance than we have getting Republicans to change.
