Although we may wish otherwise, the world is under no obligation to give us peace, freedom, safety, or health. Human history overflows with wars, oppression, violence, ignorance, and wasted lives—and yet here we are, on a rich yet precarious planet. Rather than despairing, we can continue to support each other, work, and move forward. We should celebrate what progress we make, which is all the more precious for being uncommon, small, or tentative. Family, friends, and communities can still be sources of resolve, insight, and joy.
