I am so f'ing proud of my 11 year old [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-05 I live in a purple area in the southern suburbs of Pittsburgh. We have never shied away from having hard conversations or hiding adult topics in our family. We believe in teaching our children to think for themselves, arming them with the tools they need to acquire and validate information. She has always asked been curious questions about Trump and why he speaks/acts the way he does, but got interested in the Presidential election over the summer after Harris became the nominee. The first foray, albeit a small one, was in September when she started getting anxious about all of the Trump signs and some of the things Trump was saying, specifically about Jews. That Sunday, we went to our local Harris office for Democracy and Donuts and she was able to share some of her concerns and fears and see like-minded people working towards a Harris presidency. She then asked my wife and I if she could be responsible for getting our signs. Of course we said yes. What impressed us most was that she didn’t go for the generic signs, she wanted people to know why we support what we support. She picked the “In this house, we believe...”, “Vote Like Your Daughter’s Rights Depend on It”, and “Harris/Walz, unity over division”. Fast forward a few weeks and my wife and I had both begun getting more involved with the campaign. We live close to where this happened. We were asked to come to this location the following day to provide a stronger Democratic presence. She stood at the end of the line with another D volunteer, directing voters to the line, making sure they had collateral and talking to everyone about why she wanted to see a Harris presidency. She didn’t get upset or intimidated when a parent of a former classmate showed up dressed head-to-toe in Trump regalia holding a large cross and basically performing exorcisms on voters. She came home invigorated asking when we could do more. Last Sunday, we got two canvass lists and went door knocking. By the fourth door, I didn’t have to say a word. She made sure everyone had a plan to vote, knew their polling station, and what to do if they had a mail-in ballot. She even had the pleasure of talking to someone who had originally responded to Harris survey as “strong Trump” tell her that she was voting blue down the ticket. Last night, she demanded we got to the Harris rally and loved every second of it. We didn’t get home until after midnight, but she made sure to tell us that she was going with my wife to her poll observing station in downtown Pittsburgh and wouldn’t take no for an answer. She’s been there for three hours now working with other D volunteers on final GOTV efforts. Regardless of what happens tonight, she gives me hope and has made me a super proud papa UPDATE: She’s been at the polling location for about 3 ½ hours now. The report… at the polling check in is a woman with blue hair and the judge of elections’ partner stopped by in her bright purple sequined and feathery dance costume to say hello and parked her gigantic Kamala sign with her bicycle right by the doorway…. My daughter’s response to all this is that her day has been “quiet and boring”. I got a good laugh out of it, but then got sad about the state of politics.
