Barbie Saw It Coming [1]

This Election Day morning it is possible to breathe a little more easily, thanks to Anne Setzer’s revelation that women may be turning out for Kamala at higher levels that other pollsters predicted. If Harris and down-ballot Democrats do win decisively, the real trigger behind America’s deep polarization will have finally become very clear.

The base of Trump’s Republican Party is the manosphere. MAGA is largely a movement of white men without a college education who feel disempowered by all the ways the feminist movement changed society. Trump is nothing if not the ultimate avatar of toxic masculinity, which is more than enough to explain the devotion of his base. The more toxic his behavior, the more deeply the manosphere embraces him.

OK, that’s not quite the whole story. We have to factor in racism, as well. MAGA is nothing more and nothing less than sexism plus racism. But the sexism may run be deeper.

There are so very many indications that the resentment working class American men is the deepest fault line in American politics and society. Their backlash against autonomous women, against the very ideal of equality between the sexes and races — not economic or foreign policy, not environmental policy, not any policy — is what so sharply divides us.

One telling sign is the appeal of MAGA to some Black and Hispanic men, who may be more strongly attracted by the movement’s sexism than they are repelled by its racism, and is something polls picked up. But also consider how the nomination of a black woman — who almost never refers to her sex or her race —as Trump’s nemesis. Harris is, and has been, for the manosphere, the personification of all they dread and fear.

Kamala has been kryptonite to MAGA, causing Trump and his campaign to melt down, exposing their toxicity to the max, and help defeat themselves.

Who knew that Barbie would prove to be more prescient than the most insightful pundit?
