Right to choose your priorities (Political Cartoon) [1]

When it comes to fundamental rights, the argument about “leaving it to each state to decide” VS federal protection is no new topic. When striving to give women the vote, the strategy was discussed. Would it be better to at least let some women get the right by going “state-by-state” ? But then leaving other women without this basic right depending on their state of residence? As it should be when it comes to fundamental rights, it was not left to “state-by-state” so all women can vote today.



However, it still feels like we are often not heard or thought about.



In the case of abortion access, the entire USA previously had the right but it is now based on “state to state” decisions. Make no mistake, those who view it as an expansion of fetus rights instead of a restriction of women’s rights are discussing the best way to make it nation-wide as well.



Meanwhile, in states where doctors have to worry about being investigated for ending a pregnancy, there continues to be doctors who will avoid investigating illness or injury of any pregnant woman. It is far easier to send them home with an incorrect diagnosis unrelated to their pregnancy. The recent loss of 18-yr old Nevaeh Crain of Texas was tragic. Review medical records show if she was not sent home with a “strep throat” diagnosis as a pregnant woman having abdominal cramps, it is possible she could have survived and given birth. Instead, doctors avoided treating her, sending her home twice, until it was too later for either of them.

Life threatening complications and pregnancy losses that need interventions are far more common than many realize since we don't openly talk about them. I have had it happen to myself twice. But my doctors and I were free to discuss the situations and choose what was best. That may be why I am still here today. When abortions are only allowed when it threatens the life of the woman, naturally waiting for that to happen is going to result in the death of some women.
