Garbage: If Markos writes about this topic again, hopefully he'll include a correction [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-11-04 In two recent Daily Kos front page articles — this one and this one — Markos Moulitsas states that President Joe Biden called a comedian “garbage.” He didn’t. Due to a transcription error (and perhaps also due to Biden’s stutter) there was initially some confusion over what Biden said, which the GOP was happy to exploit. This topic was discussed in an earlier, timely front page article by Oliver Willis: In a Tuesday video call with the group Voto Latino, Biden said, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s—his—his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” clearly saying that the “garbage” here is the pro-Trump speaker’s “demonization of Latinos.” But because Biden stuttered in the middle of his statement, Trump and company have seized on this to falsely allege that he was speaking about individuals, not the hate that was on display at the Trump rally. “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” Biden said in a tweet after. But at a rally in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, Sen. Marco Rubio lied and said, “Just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage.” (A day later Walter Einenkel posted another front page article on this topic, “Republicans are ready to investigate an apostrophe.”) When Markos posted his first article, I pointed out his error in this comment: kos is wrong. Biden did not call that comedian, or anyone, “garbage.” He called the demonization of Puerto Ricans garbage. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.” The White House stenographers missed an apostrophe, then corrected it, then got called out for not first getting permission from their supervisor to correct it. This is the level of ridiculousness which passes for a “scandal” in the Biden administration, you know? (In the intrepid mainstream media’s view, the corrected transcript must be wrong, because it must be the case that if Trump calls people garbage, then so does Biden. Both sides.) I don’t expect Markos saw my comment and I assume he missed Willis’s and Einenkel’s articles and is unaware that Biden himself has reiterated that he was referring to the disgusting remarks, not to people. (Perhaps Markos never actually read Biden’s remark, since his unique interpretation of it doesn’t make sense whether the apostrophe is there or not.) I don’t expect Markos is likely to write more articles about this subject, but if he happens to, I hope he includes a correction regarding his previous misinterpretation.
