Long Lines Right Now in Metro Atlanta as Early Voting Ends [1]

As an Atlantan — we live in super blue Dekalb — this is encouraging to see. In the metro area, we’re seeing a turnout surge on the last day of early voting. There are long lines right now, as we hit early evening. These are rapidly growing and diverse counties.

Wait times at some metro Atlanta polling places are creeping up in the final hours of early voting.

The secretary of state's office reported that more than 3.9 million people have cast early in-person or absentee ballots ahead of Tuesday's general election. That's about 54% of active registered voters.

As of 4:30 p.m., today has been the busiest in-person voting day this week, with 219,613 casting ballots. Approximately 35,000 voters cast ballots across the state from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The burst of voting has led to some long lines.

By late afternoon, five of Gwinnett County’s 13 early voting sites reported lines longer than 30 minutes. Two locations reported wait times of more than an hour – the Five Forks Library (an hour and 10 minutes) and the Collins Hill Library (an hour and 45 minutes). A few Gwinnett sites had little or no waiting.

Cobb County reported lines of more than an hour at two locations: the East Cobb Government Services Center (75 minutes) and the Smyrna Community Center (90 minutes).

In DeKalb County, only two of 18 early voting sites reported wait times of more than 30 minutes.
