Help Get Voter Intimidation Signs Removed [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-28 Here in Putnam County NY, in the Hudson Valley north of New York City, we are seeing yard signs for the purpose of voter intimidation. One such sign is at 472 NY-403, Garrison, NY 10524. The signs say: ONLY CITIZENS CAN VOTE DON’T BREAK THE LAW! This is dirty politics. You can do something about it. Help get these removed by filing a complaint with the state Division of Elections. Why do these violate election law? 1. They are posted on municipal land. The county regulation § 175-39D requires a permit. 2. They do not have the “Paid for by ...” footer required by code. 3. This sign is intended to intimidate because it hints at extra scrutiny around citizenship or possible legal trouble. Even though it’s true that only citizens can vote in federal and state elections, putting it this way—especially near polling places—might make people feel uneasy or unwelcome. For some, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, it can create stress around voting, even if they're fully eligible and have the right to be there. ( ← yes I used CGPT for that) electionenforcement.ny.gov/… says: Voter Intimidation All complaints relating to voter intimidation should be immediately directed to the New York State Attorney General (NYSAG)’s Election Protection Hotline at (866) 390-2992, or submitted online using the NYSAG’s online Election Complaint Form. I haven’t yet figured out how to make that form work because it asks for a polling place. Phone might be necessary. A different form for submitting reports — “Division of Election Law Enforcement Online Complaint Form” — is at form.jotform.com/... Here is what I personally wrote in my complaint: A yard sign posted at 472 NY-403, Garrison, NY 10524 violates election law and is intended for voter intimidation. I think but am not sure that location is also a polling place. The sign says: ONLY CITIZENS CAN VOTE DON’T BREAK THE LAW! Why does this violate election law? 1. It are posted on municipal land. For some, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, it can create stress around voting, even if they're fully eligible and have the right to be there. The process I have figured out is a little awkward. Post a comment if you find ways to improve it. Let’s do this!
