Cost of Owning a Home and Climate Change [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-28 The other day, at a press conference, Kamala was asked about her plans to reduce the cost of home ownership. Obviously the cost of mortgage interest, utilities, down payments and rising property values make it harder for people to afford to buy a home. But I was hoping she would mention another factor and that was to tie rising homeowners insurance costs to climate change. Even if your home was not impacted by hurricanes the fact is that the costs of covering all homes go up when insurers have to cover billions in damages. Florida has gotten to the point that many insurers have totally pulled out of the market. Even California, that suffers from wild fires and mud slides is impacted. Actively addressing climate is a key to controlling insurance costs which impact home ownership costs. We need to tie policies regarding climate, taxes, immigration, infrastructure, and tariffs to the concerns people have regarding rising costs.
