Poll Watching In Philly: Harris Is Rocking The Vote Even Before The Boss [1]

As a poll watcher, I talk with a lot of people outside the various satelite election offices where I am stationed. Honestly, as a person, I am naturally a talker. I would, as they say, talk to a fireplug. And I am, at heart, a voyeur. I love to look at, listen to and immerse myself in the world around me.

And again and again and again, my conversations are about Harris and my observations are that people LOVE HER. Unbidden, people tell me ‘We need her.’ ‘It is too important not to vote!’ ‘I’m a Harris boy!’ ‘I have never voted mail-in ballot before. I checked three times to make sure I did it right.’ ‘I got it done today.’ ‘It’s so weird to have already voted.’

I watch people kiss their ballot and then hesitate before dropping it in the box. I watch Moms take selfies with their daughters and people cross themselves as the ballot slips into the box. I watch old men whoop as they walk away, pumping their fists in the air.



Black, white, gay, hispanic, straight, young, old. Everyone wants to play their part in building a better America. People both know and sense that their vote is historic, an almost mystical connection to the future they want to see and they are treating their vote with the reverence the situation deserves.



But today went beyond the typical. We had a group of ‘Souls to the polls.’ I watched the security guard gently treat the schizophrenic woman outside the office like a human being. I got some frozen Philadelphia Water Ice that was delicious.



And a Hispanic man, a Harris voter, told me I needed to be on this street on the 5th. I explained to him that the election office was not a polling place on the 5th, that I would be at whatever polling station I get assigned.

‘No,’ the man said. ‘Not during the day. Come after the polls close. Be here for the victory party!’

So GOTV. GOTV. GOTV for another 10 days and join me at that party!
