My Dad's Example [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-27 My Dad just died on October 21, two days short of his 86th birthday. He began experiencing his decline from Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, starting slowly but eventually robbing him of nearly every bit of knowledge he had gained in his lifetime. I am grateful to him for many, many things. He was a man of great love and deep integrity, and I couldn’t have asked for a better father. He and Mom were adamant Democrats for all their lives, and she continues to vote accordingly. Even in the midst of Dad’s many hospital stays in recent months, she made sure to vote early on an absentee ballot. They have watched a lot of MSNBC in the years they’ve had to stay home more and more due to Dad’s illness. One of the last truly political decisions my dad made was in 2016. When Trump won the election, Dad said he would no longer fly the US flag in front of the house. He continued to fly the Wisconsin state flag on his tall permanent flag pole next to the front porch, but with Trump in the White House, he refused to fly our national flag. He felt this election of a horrible man dishonored our country. He wanted no part of that. I’m proud of my dad for many of the actions he took throughout his life. He stood up for people who were victims of discrimination and supported the rights of all people. He was the first liberal Catholic I knew. I am hoping that his opposition to Trump will be affirmed by the upcoming election, so I can continue to be the kind of Democrat he always was, and make a difference in this world.
