Poll Watching in Philly: Thank You, Poll Workers, For Your Service [1]

As a former Marine, I am used to folks, few of whom know me, saying ‘Thank you for your service.’ My response is always awkward. I enjoyed being a Marine. I was well paid. I got what I had been promised. No thanks are needed.

Now more than ever, poll workers are really the ones we should be thanking for their service. Under assault, literally and figuratively, from everyone from Trump to some random MAGA-hat wearing jerk in Texas, poll workers are American democracy’s first line of defense and their job is not easy.



Poll workers are under paid, under appreciated and under fire. Again and again, I hear voters praise the election office staff at whatever office I am stationed at. And I see it everyday- they are polite, tactful, informed and professional while dealing with stress that would cripple many of us. These folks rock! I can’t say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE loud enough or often enough to reflect the debt we all owe them.

When Kamala wins, and keep up the GOTV to make that victory massive, America will owe an unpayable debt to the unsung heroics of the frontline election workers who are, every day, making sure everyone who can vote is allowed to vote and that those votes are counted. Thanks to the poll workers, we can be confident that votes are cast and counted honestly here in Philadelphia. And everywhere else where these heroes make democracy work.
