Wisconsin Republican State Senator Endorses Harris [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-24 civicmedia.us/… Republican Robert Cowles, currently Wisconsin’s longest serving State Senator, has announced that he will vote for Kamala Harris. The legislator from Green Bay said, “Trump has to be defeated, and we have to protect the Constitution. And the country will go on, even with some liberal things that Harris might do, or might not do…” While a number of other prominent Republicans have crossed party lines to support Harris, mostly they are former elected officials or people who served in the Trump Administration. Cowles is a currently serving member of the 33-seat upper house in one of the most critical states. He is retiring this year after redistricting would likely have forced him to run against another Republican. Brown County, home of Green Bay, (population 268,000), voted for Trump by 11% over Hillary Clinton, and the county voted for Trump in 2020 by 7% over Joe Biden. “I believe this guy Trump is a totalitarian and very much a fascist,” said Cowles. “You know, the old adage, past is prologue, he’s indicated that in his words in deeds, especially in trying to overturn a free and fair election.” Cowles said it was important for him to come forward now to “protect the Constitution and really our way of life going forward.” Republican mayor of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Shawn Reilly, has also endorsed Harris. The city of Waukesha (population 71,000) is the largest in Waukesha County (population 407,000), and a suburb of Milwaukee. Waukesha County is the most critical for Republicans to win the state, though GOP margins have been slipping there along with many suburban counties.
