Biden: Morally Correct; Strategically Smart [1]

As President Biden noted, this apology is long overdue. On Friday, at the tribally-controlled Gila Crossing Community School outside of Phoenix, President Biden will formally apologize to the indigenous community for the atrocities of a 150-year-old Indian boarding school policy that aimed to culturally assimilate indigenous children.

”I'm heading to do something that should have been done a long time ago - make a formal apology to the Indian nations for the way we treated their children for so many years.” See, Biden to issue apology for Indian boarding schools

Starting in 1819 and continuing into the 1970s, the federal government forcibly removed tens of thousands of Indigenous children from their homes and families in an attempt to assimilate the children into American culture.

Though the Biden Administration has been committed to the Indigenous community, the timing of this formal apology should support Kamala Harris’ campaign. In 2020, voters in Apache, Navajo and Coconino counties cast more than 52,000 votes and Biden won Arizona by just a little over 10,000 votes. More than 83% of the voters in Navajo Nation went for Biden over Trump. This year, Jaynie Parrish, executive director of Arizona Native Vote, says that her goal is to hit a 2% increase in Indigenous voter turnout over 2020. Certainly, President Biden’s actions on Friday will assist in this goal and Kamala.
