Early Voting in Central Illinois Today [1]

Early voting in my county in Illinois started earlier (this week? last week?) but, my nearby voting center opened today for the first time this election season.

I got there a little after 10am and finished just before 11 am. I was surrounded by 20-25 people almost entirely grey or white heads of hair. At “only” 50 years old, I was the baby in line and there was a lot of chatter. At least a couple of them announced who they were voting for verbally while most of them agreed that they were better off 4 years ago than they were now.

I reacted to that sentence and asked about COVID and found out from just one of them that their sister died “from COVID in 2020” but it was really something else and they just wanted that COVID money. The others in line seemed quieter when COVID was brought up, but then taxes and inflation become the topic until we got into the building.

Other than a single person and laptop during the initial voter registration look ups that felt slow, the rest of the process was straightforward. Vote for some changes to the state constitution, should there be an increase in the school tax, and then I proudly voted for Harris/Waltz and looked at the rest of my ballet in annoyance as there were no Democrats for Congressional House, State senate, school board, auditor, and the one that still confuses me, coroner. Why should the party the coroner belongs to should/would matter? I don’t know that and the only answers I can think of are dark.

Anyway, I voted for Democrats where I could, no Republicans at all and turned it in and was out of the door just about an hour later...where I got stuck behind a guy driving a truck with ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flag as we were trying to get out of the parking lot.
