Republicans: “It’s Immigration Stupid” [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-16 The Republican Party is down to one issue of consequence in the closing days and it’s looking like a winner for them, to a point. Scaring the bejesus out of voters talking about the coming “hordes of migrants” that will snatch babies from their cribs, take their homes and livelihoods, is their dominant strategy going to the finish line, and it’s working to the degree it needs to regarding the Senate race in Montana and presidential polling in Arizona for example. If you can stomach turning on Fox or the other conservative media outlets, the border “crisis” is the most prominent chiron you are likely to see. It doesn’t matter that the Biden administration has dramatically slowed the number of crossings of migrants from its peak. More boarder initiatives have been enacted under the current administration than any of the previous Republicans who have held that office in the last fifty years. People seem relatively unaware that it was Trump who personally called on his supporters in Congress to kill the bipartisan bill that would have beefed up security at the border. We are seeing why that strategy worked for him. They barely mention the economy any more. They have the issue they think will at least allow them to hold the Senate. They need two seats and it looks like they will get them. Jon Tester, while beloved in his state probably can’t survive the current of anti immigration fear mongering that his state is being bombarded with in political ads hitting people’s televisions every twenty minutes. The same can be said of Arizona and yet I believe the Democrat running for Senate, Ruben Gallego, will defeat Kari Lake who has worn out her welcome as a candidate in that state. Trump only lost by 10,000 votes there in 2020 and he will probably be able to make that up if the polling is even close to being accurate in Arizona right now. Republican strategists who study the analytics are aware that winning the presidency is probably a Hail Mary at this point and are focusing their attention on protecting the Senate. They can stop Harris from achieving her goals if they control it. No Federal court confirmations and no bills passed sets them up for the next round in the 2026 midterms and 2028 where they will declare her presidency a failure because she got nothing done. Our system is completely broken and favors Republicans due to the two Senator mandate, which is discriminatory against states where people actually live, and the Electoral College. The conservative Supreme Court can, and probably will, kill any major Executive Action cards a Harris administration takes. Until we fix these, the trifecta needed to get things done for Democrats when they win the Presidency is going to remain illusive.
