WisDems Starting Lineup: Meet LuAnn Bird, Democrat for Wisconsin's Assembly District 61 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-07 This year is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reset Wisconsin’s State Legislature, flip a chamber, and open a path to a blue trifecta—because, after years of struggle, democracy defeated the gerrymander. We’ve got fair maps now. Next: actually flip seats. “I can’t sit back when I see a problem.” That’s the philosophy of today’s member of the WisDems Starting Lineup—Hales Corners’ LuAnn Bird for Assembly District 61. When a problem comes along, LuAnn Bird takes action. LuAnn Bird came agonizingly close to flipping a seat blue in 2022, with a campaign that inspired people throughout Wisconsin and beyond. She made quick videos about some of the doors she knocked that year—like this one. Watch and you’ll see why LuAnn is so beloved. x Here is what civility at the doors looks like! pic.twitter.com/RVD0H9MVSK — LuAnn Bird (@LuAnnBird84) September 5, 2024 Pre-redistricting, AD61 was a red seat that included an area west of Kenosha. Under new maps, AD61 includes the western Milwaukee suburbs of Greendale, Hales Corners, and parts of Greenfield. With LuAnn on the ticket, we can flip this now 50/50 tossup district blue. LuAnn Bird gets things done. She saw her local public schools weren’t wheelchair accessible, so she got on the school board to fix it. When her local septic systems failed, she got on the local sanitary commission to fix that too. Read more on LuAnn here. As a member of the Whitnall School Board, she’s brought together coalitions with neighboring school districts. LuAnn has also been Executive Director and Lobbyist for the League of Women Voters of WI. You can contribute to LuAnn Bird’s campaign here. LuAnn supports protecting reproductive rights, passing common sense gun laws while preserving 2nd amendment rights, expanding disability rights, providing tax relief for the middle class, strengthening public schools, and making a better life for our veterans. If LuAnn Bird wins Assembly District 61, the chance for a Democratic assembly majority this year leaps up—and so too does the path to a statewide law protecting the reproductive freedom of Wisconsinites. LuAnn’s opponent in 2022 was the same guy running against her now: Republican Bob Donovan. LuAnn lost by only 525 votes. That was in the 84th district. Now in the bluer AD61, LuAnn has an excellent chance of beating Donovan and flipping AD61. After last year’s race, she joined The Recombobulation Area’s Dan Shafer to create a hope-giving podcast called Bird On A Wire: Conversations on Hope, Civility & Action. Watch the first episode. That’s the kind of joy you get with Bird. But her opponent brings the opposite kind of energy to the race. Donovan has vowed to “secure the rights of the unborn,” and this year co-sponsored a 14-week abortion ban bill in WI. Donovan doesn’t currently live in the AD61, and would have to move there if he wins. Let’s save him the trouble and elect LuAnn Bird. LuAnn Bird is the kind of leader AD61 needs. LuAnn says, “I will bring civility to the political process and work to pass legislation that improves the quality of life for people in my district.” Help LuAnn Bird flip AD61 blue by donating to her campaign now In Wisconsin this year, we’ve got Dems in 97 out of the 99 Assembly races and all 16 of the Senate races. We support them all. The GOP? Just 84/99 and 11/16. Our Starting Lineup races are the closest. Wins would end the GOP Assembly majority & break the Senate supermajority.
