One weird trick to GOTV [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-06 I live in Arizona, where 80% of voters vote by mail. Since the 2014 election, I’ve been hosting a biannual Voter Party. I invite family and friends to my house, and they bring their early ballots. Together, we discuss every candidate, issue, and ballot measure. Then, we mail back our ballots. I usually hold these gatherings on the Sunday before the ballots are due. I started this because I read that a common reason people don’t vote is they don’t feel confident in selecting the right candidates or understanding the issues. With more states adopting no-excuse absentee voting, consider hosting one. It helps casual voters feel more confident about their choices, especially for down-ballot races like school boards, corporate commissioners, sheriffs and more. Several of my regular attendees didn’t vote or rarely voted until I created or invited them to this event. Now, they look forward to voting. This year, two children have just turned 18, and their parents are bringing them to the party so they can cast their votes for the first time! I'm always surprised at how seriously even the most casual voters take their vote. They ask thoughtful, in-depth questions. I usually spend several hours researching the ballot beforehand, including candidates for positions like mining inspector. However, I don’t look up school board candidates until asked because there are just too many! Everyone enjoys the event, even the non-political junkies. I’ll admit, the ample supply of mimosas and margaritas might contribute to the fun!
