Politico Thinks You're Shallow and Stupid [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-03 Politico: Tim Walz has a problem misspeaking. Since being tapped as Kamala Harris’ running mate, the folksy, plain-speaking Minnesota governor has had to explain a growing number of inaccurate statements — and at times embellishments — about his past. … Walz’s misstatements could contradict the image that the campaign has painted of him as an upstanding, everyday Midwest guy. Let’s detail these “inaccurate statements” Politico mentions that could prove to be SO harmful to the Harris/Walz campaign: Walz said he was in Hong Kong during the Bejing protest in 1989, when in reality he’d been there in the same summer instead of at EXACTLY the same time. He said he was a “retired command sergeant major” despite only going through the process to obtain that rank when retiring, EVEN THOUGH it’s common for military personnel to refer to themselves as a rank when the final coursework is the only thing remaining. He referred to “those weapons of war, that I carried in war” even though he’d never been in combat, EVEN THOUGH he actually carried those weapons while serving in the military. He implied that IVF helped his family have children, BUT it was only a similar procedure that wasn’t exactly IVF. To summarize, he spoke about being somewhere at the same time as an event but it wasn’t exactly the same time, he referred to himself in a common way for military people to do so even though it’s not technically correct, he referred to “war” when he just meant “military service”, and he referred to a common procedure that was similar to but not exactly the procedure they actually did. With those falsehoods, how will the Harris campaign possibly survive? Meanwhile, Trump and Vance lie about virtually everything, from immigrants eating pets to being for abortion bans before being against them to the 2020 election results to dozens of other things that actually impact people’s lives. Politico, I understand the need for clicks and attention during the political season. But to me, assuming these minor differences in details “may haunt the campaign” is incredibly disrespectful and insulting to not only your readers but the voting public in general. Do better. Edit: They changed the headline from “It may haunt the campaign.” to “, and the campaign keeps playing clean-up.” (And now it’s “cleaning up” — apparently they can’t settle on one. THAT sure signals confidence in your content.) Apparently even they realize they’re putting too much emphasis on how “harmful” this actually could be.
