How the North Carolina Legislature Left Homes Vulnerable to Helene [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-03 For all the GOP hollering about climate change not being a thing...they certainly look foolish when climate attacks their own regions. Climate denialism seems to be part of their DNA along with anything else they don’t want to pay to prevent. But this story exemplifies their total disregard for science and facts. Its a pretty short article but hits the point accurately. Over the past 15 years, North Carolina lawmakers have rejected limits on construction on steep slopes, which might have reduced the number of homes lost to landslides; blocked a rule requiring homes to be elevated above the height of an expected flood; weakened protections for wetlands, increasing the risk of dangerous storm water runoff; and slowed the adoption of updated building codes, making it harder for the state to qualify for federal climate-resilience grants. www.nytimes.com/... I am so tired of these facts-blind folks who don’t accept what they see with their own eyes. Conservatism is a two edge sword. You either are careful with spending but realize the value of being preemptive for the sake of your citizens, or you are spiteful and want to not spend money no matter how it affects your citizens, ignoring facts.
