**Correlation Does Not Equal Causation** [1]

If Trump wins, it’s going to be in large part because a huge percentage of the population of this country doesn’t understand my headline.

I’ve been somewhat addicted to CNN lately, having it on in the background while I prepare tax returns (my trade). As such, I’ve heard a lot of interviews with Trump supporters.

What I’ve learned is that the cult has morphed recently. It used to be the cult of hate and scapegoating and pretty much nothing else.

Now there’s this new element, whereby lots of people are getting roped in by the “things were cheaper and life was better when Trump was president.”

You know what? I can admit that in some ways that is true. In some ways, the economy *was* better. We should all be able to admit that.

What many of us here understand though, is that there was this whole pandemic thing that really botched everything up, and that Trump himself really botched up, and that recovery took a long-ass time.

In many ways, we are still recovering.

Trump’s minions are not acknowledging that. They may not be aware of it. All they know is things were better once, and they want the guy who was in charge then. They have an easier time believing that things were better BECAUSE of him, than trying to understand that an economic recovery is a dynamic thing that takes time.

I don’t know how the Harris/Walz team can address this willful ignorance on the part of so many, in so short a time period. I blame the destruction of our education system by Republicans. People need to understand basic logic. Correlation does not equal causation. More and more I feel like if the thing we cannot bear to think about happens, it’s because people simply don’t understand that, and don’t want to.
