Economic Troubles a month before the election: Port Workers on Strike [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-10-01 Hadn’t seen anything about this here today, but Tuesday Morning-- a month before the most important election of our lifetimes-- the International Longshoremen Association went on strike after months of negotiations failed to create an acceptable deal for union workers. While I know we are generally supportive of unions exerting their power to push for more favorable conditions for workers, the rub is that this could unfortunately result in massive pain for both companies and consumers, and sour feelings about the state of the economy: The U.S. port strike is bad news for farmers, furniture stores — and just about everyone else Hopefully President Biden can lend a hand as he has previously to expedite this process and get the ports open as soon as possible. The economy has finally made strides in terms of consumer sentiment, leading to a boost to VP Harris’ campaign prospects. The last thing this country needs is for this to be derailed mere days before an election. The workers deserve to be treated fairly and renegotiate their contracts in a favorable way. But we know T*ump’s opinion on strikes and unions, so they also can’t afford to let this spill over into a potential T*ump administration.
