Scene in movie prompts questions, raises concerns [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-30 So there’s a scene in the third episode of the Bourne franchise where reporter Simon Ross is in a conference with his boss. It takes place in his boss’ office, or so I presume. While in conference, meanwhile, entering stage right is a lady who then relays to Ross the following: “(There’s a) call for you.” Ross begs, I think, “Who is it?” To which the woman replies: “He won’t give his name.” Ross takes the call. The caller, it turns out, is, well, you guessed it, Jason Bourne. The movie is the Bourne Ultimatum. I assume you’re all familiar with it? The scene in the movie in question, that is. Analysis What I find really interesting if not incredulous is in the movie, Ross — whom it appears is playing the part of the Guardian’s World Security Correspondent — is working on a multi-part expose. Sorry, but as an audience member, I find the whole thing far-fetched. I mean really far-fetched. First of all, why would a reporter, well-known or not, agree to use his or her own name where being given that kind of assignment is concerned? I mean it’s not like Ross (in this case) doesn’t know the potential risk involved due to the nature of the articles he’s writing, I mean, considering who his source is (in this case it being Neil Daniels, the named intelligence agency station chief in Madrid), and due to the sensitive nature of the source content. (Full disclosure: In the movie, it appears Ross does not. At least, that’s the impression I got). And, why would Daniels even need to meet with Ross at all? Couldn’t Ross just be mailed all the illuminating information he needed to compose the expose? That way, of the people connected, not a single one of their true identities would ever be revealed. (Full disclosure: If that actually turned out to be the case, then, in my opinion, it probably wouldn’t have made for intriguing and/or suspenseful movie copy). At any rate, that’s my take.
