[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-28 I am one of those lucky residents of Nevada who can vote on-line and I did so yesterday. The system is called NVEASE and works like a charm. Unfortunately, it is only available to Nevada residents living outside the United States. Voting took about three minutes to complete and I received an e-mail acknowledging receipt of my ballot. I will also receive updates that let me know when my ballot is processed and counted. After a few hours of self-satisfied gloating about getting an early score on the board for Team Blue, I started thinking how there is no reason for this type of application not being available to everyone. Nevada is one of the states that mails and absentee ballot to every registered voter in the state. It’s a natural progression to open the proven on-line application to every eligible voter, regardless of location. This change is even more urgently needed in light of the changes being made to the U.S. Postal Service infrastructure in the state. The regional processing center in Reno has been closed and all mail for Northern Nevada is now sent to Sacramento for processing. This includes letters sent from one Reno address to another. Making on-line voting available to everyone will help avoid this bottleneck. The only drawback I see is revealed in the disclaimer that states your right to ballot privacy is compromised by use of the system. Voter’s ballots are linked to their e-mail account and the last four digits of their Social Security number. A small price to pay to eliminate the hassle of processing absentee ballots by hand.
