A Different Perspective on Abortion [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-27 In 1950 my mother, at age 48, became pregnant, her second in 18 years. She had always been in poor health and her doctor’s strongly recommended she terminate the pregnancy. In 1950 my mother had a choice that would have been outlawed had her health not been threatened. As you can probably conclude, she chose not to follow her doctor’s recommendation. She survived but her health began to decline more aggressively afterwards. Since I’m writing this you might assume I’m pro-life. You would be wrong in that assumption. I’m a man and I strongly believe that men have no business whatsoever in determining how a woman decides what his best for her body when it comes to reproductive matters. There are many reasons why a woman may decide that an abortion is in her own best interest. Neither men, or women, have an inherent right to make that decision for her. If my mother had chosen differently, I bear no grudge had she done so. Other peoples lives would have been affected no doubt, but our lives are affected by other’s decisions every second of every day. Life would have gone on. Only recently I learned of an interesting new fact. Follow if you can: The mother of my sister’s husband became pregnant with a much greater age difference him and his new brother than between me and my sister’s (18 years if you’ll recall). Her health was fine. However, she tried several times to induce a miscarry (intentionally falling down the stairs is one example I heard) . The law did not offer her a choice so she chose the only method available to her. She did not succeed. So, to summarize, two births occurred. One the result of a choice. The other due to the lack of success. My point: My mother, due to circumstances, had a choice. My brother-in-law’s mother harmed herself because she was not able to make a choice that was safe. That is so wrong. The GOP is largely against abortion, some members positions so extreme they believe in no exceptions. Yet, many of these same law makers are against prenatal care, child healthcare, child care, child food assistance, and public education. These are not compatible positions when you proclaim you’re pro-life. I can spell hypocrisy. The GOP obviously cannot.
