Helene from the ground [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-26 Y’all, yes, hurricanes are destructive. Climate change is real. Wind’s blowing really hard out my door right now and it’s raining sideways. My friends across town have lost power. I haven’t yet. But not every storm is a Katrina. Katrina was Katrina because of super-shitty government. It was awful, disgracefully awful. After it was over, the gulf states, red though they are, looked at Katrina and said, “We don’t want to do that again.” Then a few years later there was that one in Houston that was awful. And again, that was mostly a super-shitty government problem. But they did make improvements afterwards. Infrastructure is a government problem. Climate change is real. Hurricanes are real, too, but honestly this one is pretty run of the mill. I’m looking at sideways rain out my window, I hear branches falling, but I’m not scared. Been through this before. Go through this every other year or so. Thanks for caring for sure. And yes, some people will lose their homes and that’s sad but that’s a risk we know we face and we actually know how to ride this shit out. We’re okay. On the other hand, we have a democracy to save and it’s threatened in a way that it hasn’t been since the 1860s. We can ride the hurricane storm out. We hope the country will focus on riding the election out and save our democracy.
